The deadrise boat is one of the most recognizable symbols of Maryland's Eastern Shore maritime culture. Developed in the late 1800s by Chesapeake Bay watermen, these rugged wooden workboats were designed with a distinctive V-shaped hull - or "deadrise" - that allowed them to navigate the Bay's shallow waters while handling rough weather. Originally built for oystering, crabbing, and fishing, deadrise boats became the backbone of the Chesapeake seafood industry. Today, they remain a lasting tribute to the ingenuity, hard work, and legacy of the watermen who helped shape life along Maryland's Eastern Shore.
